Indian BSF commander brutally beats fisherman in West Bengal

Kolkata: A commander of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) brutally beat a young fisherman in West Bengal, leaving him injured.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, 20-year-old Anowar Mondal, hails from Parashpur village in the Murshidabad District of West Bengal. He was severely assaulted, and his fishing license was confiscated by the BSF personnel.

The human rights organization Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha (MASUM) has raised the matter with India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), calling for urgent intervention. In a letter to the NHRC, MASUM’s Secretary Kirity Roy emphasized that the assault, carried out by the BSF commander, not only caused physical harm but also instilled fear and insecurity within the local fishing community. He condemned the actions of the BSF personnel, asserting that such human rights violations at the Indo-Bangladesh border have become disturbingly routine. Roy called on the NHRC to intervene and protect the fundamental rights of vulnerable individuals like Mondal, highlighting the urgent need for justice in this case.
