Ganderbal residents protest against growing shortage of water

Water supply suspended across Srinagar city, adjoining areas

Srinagar: The residents in Ganderbal district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have staged a protest against the shortage of drinking water for the past several weeks.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway and raised the slogans against the authorities. The protesters including women assembled at the road and blocked it for almost one hour while chanting slogans in favour of their demands.

The residents said that they were facing tremendous hardships due to the non-availability of water. “We are being deprived of drinking water now in this scorching summer,” said a local resident.

Later a police party reached the spot and pacified the protesters following which they dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile, the residents of Srinagar and adjoining areas have also complained of disruption in supply of drinking water. The authorities are trying to pacify the residents by saying that they are confronting a major disruption in potable water supply and critical repair works on the Sindh Power Canal (PDC) is underway.

This disruption is expected to impact water availability across the city and its outskirts.
