12 killed as vehicles fall into river after bridge collapses in Gujarat
Gandhinagar: At least 12 people, including three of a family, were killed and nine injured after the collapse of a bridge in India’s western state of Gujarat.
According to Kashmir Media Service, multiple vehicles fell into the Mahisagar River and a tanker hung precariously on the edge, when the 43-year-old bridge in Gujarat’s Vadodara district collapsed.
Vadodara Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand put the death toll at 11. An hour later, rescue teams recovered one more body — of one of the three feared drowned, officials said.
A case of accidental death has been registered, and police will begin a probe after rescue operations are over. “We will also seek an inquiry report from the District Collector,” Anand said, adding that the bodies have been taken to Padra Referral Hospital for autopsy.
Last month, in a similar incident, a bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune collapsed, resulting in at least two deaths and several others being swept away.
