Election Commission not doing its job, says Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Amid ongoing protests in parliament demanding a discussion on the electoral roll revision in Bihar through the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticized the Election Commission and said it is “not doing its job”.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Congress has said that all options, including the boycott of the elections, are open before the INDIA alliance.

“Election Commission is not functioning as the Election Commission of India. The fact of the matter is that the Election Commission is not doing its job,” said Gandhi to reporters outside the parliament.

Gandhi’s remarks came as members of the INDIA alliance for the third consecutive day, staged a protest outside parliament against the Bihar SIR holding placards and banners. Both houses saw loud protests by the opposition, along with repeated adjournments as the government refused to yield to a discussion on the Bihar SIR and accused the opposition of not allowing parliament to function.

The Congress’ Bihar in-charge Krishna Allavaru said the Election Commission is putting out false data through its daily updates on the ongoing SIR in Bihar and said that “all options” are open before the INDIA bloc including boycotting the elections,

“The Election Commission has initiated a dictatorial process through SIR. We believe that all the data provided by the Election Commission is completely false. The process that the Election Commission outlined in its order on June 24 is not being followed. Therefore, all the data the Election Commission is displaying on its website or elsewhere is utterly false,” said Allavaru while addressing reporters in New Delhi.

“On behalf of the people of Bihar, we openly challenge Mr. Gyanesh Kumar to randomly select a thousand people in every assembly and verify whether the process is being followed or not. If even 25 percent of the data turns out to be correct, we are ready to accept this process. The reality is that the certificates being demanded are not even in people’s possession.
