Donald Trump slaps additional 25% tariff on India, total tariff raised to 50%
Washington: In a significant setback to Indian diplomacy, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Indian imports will now face an additional 25% tariff, raising the total tariff rate to 50%.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the U.S. President signed an executive order to enforce the new tariffs, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil as a key reason. Trump had earlier called India of being “not a good trading partner” and warned of further economic measures in response to what he termed as unfair trade practices and geopolitical insensitivity.
He had earlier stated that the tariffs on Indian goods would be raised “very substantially” within 24 hours, blaming India for buying Russian oil in large quantities and allegedly re-exporting it for profit, even as the conflict in Ukraine intensifies.
The decision marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions and could have serious implications for U.S.-India economic and strategic relations.KMS-21U
