Khalistan Referendum right move for right to self-determination

Islamabad: The global Sikh movement to achieve a homeland separate from India, Khalistan, is gaining momentum day by day and the next phase of the Khalistan referendum is being held in the United States on Sunday, August 17.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Khalistan Referendum is a right move for right to self-determination as Sikhs are determined to decide their future peacefully. The Khalistan Referendum in the US is expected to see a large turnout of Sikhs.

In the Khalistan Referendum, held around the world, lakhs of Sikhs vote peacefully for their right to self-determination in different countries.

The Khalistan Referendum is being organized by the US-based Sikh community organization, Sikhs for Justice, which has been declared a terrorist organization by the Indian government.

The Modi government is allegedly targeting Sikh activists not only at home but also abroad to stop this campaign of Sikhs. India is being accused of planning attacks on Sikh leaders in countries like the US, Canada and the UK.

The United States has exposed the alleged Indian plot to attack prominent Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, while former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed India’s involvement in the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Najjar in Parliament in 2023, after which relations between the two countries became strained.

So far, lakhs of Sikh men and women have voted in favour of an independent homeland separate from India in the Khalistan referendum. The Sikh community says that India’s labelling of their peaceful struggle as terrorism is a clear violation of human rights.

The Sikh community has appealed to the international community to take notice of India’s alleged atrocities. The Khalistan referendum is an expression of the Sikhs’ determination to decide their own future in a peaceful and democratic manner.

On August 8, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a Khalistani Sikh organization, held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington to discuss the upcoming Khalistan Referendum scheduled for 17th August 2025, and to address concerns about India’s alleged transnational repression .

The Khalistan Referendum is a global campaign initiated by SFJ to gauge support among the Sikh diaspora for the creation of an independent Sikh state, Khalistan.

The US State Department has affirmed that campaigns like the Khalistan Referendum are protected under the First Amendment, emphasizing the importance of free speech and assembly.

The widespread participation in the referendum across various countries highlights the unity and determination of the Sikh diaspora in advocating for their rights.

Peaceful advocacy is not terrorism; it’s a fundamental human right and transnational repression undermines global democratic values.
