MLA from Doda Malik Meraj arrested under PSA

Move termed a deliberate bid to muzzle Kashmiri voices

Jammu: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Modi-led BJP regime has detained Meraj Malik, the lone Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Doda, under the black law Public Safety Act (PSA) in a blatant attempt to silence dissent and crush Kashmiri voices.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Malik was arrested from his constituency in Doda and shifted to jail on the pretext of maintaining “public order”. The authorities accused him of “spreading misinformation” and “glorifying freedom fighters”.

Political observers say detaining an elected legislator under the PSA, which allows imprisonment without trial for up to two years, is an unprecedented act that exposes India’s hollow claims of democracy in the territory. They maintained that Meraj Malik was voicing the long-pending demands of his voters, and his arrest represents a deliberate attempt to crush representative politics in the region.

They say the arrest has once again exposed the BJP regime’s real face, where even elected Muslim representatives are not spared, and the voice of dissent is crushed under the garb of “law and order.” The development has further deepened public anger in the occupied territory, with calls for intensifying the struggle against India’s settler-colonial agenda.
