Mehbooba says placed under house arrest to prevent condolence visit for Prof Butt

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has said that she was put under house arrest on Thursday to stop her from offering condolences to the family of the late veteran Hurriyat leader and former APHC chairman Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, in Sopore.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba in a post on X said, “The decision to place the political leadership under house arrest today, simply to stop us from visiting Sopore to offer condolences on the demise of Professor Butt lays bare the harsh and undemocratic reality in (occupied) Jammu and Kashmir” .
Referring to the recent sacrilegious act at Hazratbal shrine, Mehbooba said the eruption of public anger was “a loud, unmistakable message from a people pushed to the edge.” She accused the BJP of being “willfully blind” to Kashmiri grievances, saying the party was determined to keep the region in turmoil, “weaponising pain and unrest for political mileage across the rest of the country.”
Earlier, the authorities also put senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest on Wednesday night to prevent him from attending the funeral prayers of the veteran Hurriyat leader.
