Two Indian troops killed, several injured in Manipur attack

Imphal: Two Indian troops were killed and several others injured in an attack in the BJP-ruled, violence-hit state of Manipur.

According to Kashmir Media Service, unidentified gunmen ambushed a patrol team of the Indian Army’s 22 Assam Rifles in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district this morning. The assailants reportedly used automatic weapons from elevated positions before retreating into the dense forest.

Two Assam Rifles personnel succumbed to their injuries, while at least five others were injured, two of them critically. The injured were airlifted to military hospitals in Imphal and Leimakhong.

Following the attack, Indian forces, including Assam Rifles and Rashtriya Rifles units, cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation to apprehend the attackers.

It is worth noting that Manipur has been gripped by severe violence since May 2023. So far, over 250 people, mostly Christians, have been killed, while thousands displaced. Tensions remain high between the Hindu-majority Meitei and Christian-dominated Kuki communities.
