Mehbooba Mufti flags massive erosion of Waqf properties in IIOJK
Over 7,000 Waqf assets lost within a year

Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said that Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has lost more than 7000 registered Waqf properties over the past year, describing it as the latest assault on Muslim rights amid an escalating pattern of marginalization.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba Mufti, in a post on X, cited data from the Indian government’s Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal, stating that 7,240 Waqf properties in IIOJK and over 355,000 lakh Waqf properties across India have gone missing.
“The widening gap in the official records raises serious questions about transparency and protection of Waqf assets”, she said, adding that the steady erosion of Waqf land reflects a broader pattern of violence, demolitions and disenfranchisement targeting Muslims. “Where does this end?” she asked.
Mehbooba also shared a screenshot of the UMEED portal indicating a comparison of Waqf property figures from December 9, 2024, and December 6, 2025. According to the data she cited, IIOJK had 32,533 registered Waqf properties on December 9 last year, a number that had declined to 25,293 as of December 7 this year, a reduction of 7240 entries.
The data further showed that, except for Maharashtra, Delhi, Bihar, Telangana, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, nearly all Indian states and union territories recorded a year-on-year decline in registered Waqf properties.
Mehbooba’s remarks come at a time when debates around the protection, documentation, and management of Waqf properties have intensified, with the UMEED database emerging as the latest flashpoint in the discourse on minority rights and institutional safeguards across India.
