SIR reflects BJP’s systematic attempt to manipulate elections for political gain

New Delhi: The newly implemented Special Identification Register (SIR) reflects BJP’s systematic attempt to manipulate elections for political gain.

According to Kashmir Media Service, by disenfranchising voters likely to support opposition parties, SIR serves as a politically motivated tool that undermines democratic norms in India.

The implementation of SIR has led to massive voter exclusions: 6.5 million in West Bengal and 9.1 million in Tamil Nadu, highlighting BJP’s efforts to marginalize anti-BJP and pro-democracy voters. Tribals, minorities, and women remain disproportionately affected, further exposing structural bias in electoral practices.

Tragically, 33 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have died due to overwork and impossible deadlines in completing the SIR process. The absence of oversight from the Government of India has placed innocent lives at risk to consolidate BJP’s political base.

This systemic incompetence and deliberate disenfranchisement reduce democracy to a mere buzzword, with electoral machinery being exploited to favor one party. The SIR also highlights institutional decay in Election Commission oversight, coordination among state agencies, and adherence to the rule of law.

Ultimately, the Government of India has failed to ensure inclusive electoral access, especially for marginalized groups. The Modi administration has normalized structural inequality and political selectivity, undermining the very foundations of Indian democracy.
