Fresh attack in Manipur: 10 houses, church torched in Kangpokpi
Imphal: Around ten houses and a church were set on fire in a village in the Champhai area of Kangpokpi district in Manipur, as violence once again erupted in the conflict-torn state.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident took place on Tuesday when armed persons entered Topka Naga village and opened fire before setting the houses ablaze, the Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) said.
The latest incident comes amid months of violent unrest in Kangpokpi district, where precarious security situation and deepening ethnic fault lines have made daily life uncertain and risky.
In its statement, LNC strongly criticised the attack, saying that the attackers deliberately targeted civilian homes and a place of worship in a “grave and reprehensible act of violence.”
“The council is particularly appalled and deeply concerned by reports that security personnel were stationed merely a few metres from the affected area as the locality is a highly sensitive red-zone area,” it said.
The council also questioned the preparedness and conduct of Indian forces that were deployed in the vicinity of the village at the time of attack. It raised concerns about their possible negligence and failure to carry out their duties.
The LNC demanded swift and stringent action against those responsible, warning against further attacks on tribal communities. It also called for heightened security measures in the affected area, rehabilitation and compensation aid and adequate relief for the victims’ families.
