Srinagar-Jammu highway remains closed due to snowfall

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway, the vital all-weather link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world, remains closed due to snowfall in and around the Navyug Tunnel.

According to Kashmir Media Service, no vehicular movement is being allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar or vice versa.

The 270-kilometre-long highway has witnessed repeated closures due to heavy snowfall, rain, and landslides in areas such as Ramban and Udhampur. The Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road are already closed. Authorities have advised people not to travel on these routes until they are fully restored and declared safe for traffic.

The highway’s prolonged closure has severely disrupted the transportation of essential commodities and passenger movement between Jammu and Srinagar, causing significant economic losses, particularly impacting trade across the territory.

Locals have long advocated for the opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road and other traditional cross-LoC trade routes to boost Kashmir’s economy.
