Modi’s Israel visit linked to emerging axis as tensions flare after Israeli strikes on Iran

Srinagar: Political observers have linked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel with what they describe as a deepening India–Israel alignment, as regional tensions escalated following Israeli strikes on Iran.

According to Kashmir Media Service, analysts say the growing proximity between New Delhi and Tel Aviv reflects a strategic shift that departs from India’s traditional policy of non-alignment and balanced engagement in West Asia. They warn that such a trajectory could further polarise the region and draw India into complex geopolitical confrontations.

Observers maintain that the Modi government’s outreach to Israel, particularly amid heightened tensions involving Iran, signals a consolidation of an ideological and strategic axis. They argue that the expanding defence and security cooperation between the two sides has implications beyond bilateral ties, potentially impacting regional stability.

The opposition Indian National Congress (INC) has openly questioned the Modi government’s pro-Israel posture, cautioning against strategic miscalculations. Congress leaders have underscored the need for adherence to principles of sovereignty and international law, pointing to inconsistencies between India’s stated global positions and its domestic policies, particularly in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Analysts further note that India hosts the world’s third-largest Muslim population, and any perceived tilt toward an anti-Muslim bloc could deepen internal fault lines and fuel social and political unrest. They warn that foreign policy decisions driven by personalised diplomacy rather than institutional consensus risk reversals and instability with changes in government.

Experts also suggest that New Delhi’s evolving alignment could strain its longstanding relations with Iran and segments of the wider Muslim world, thereby affecting its regional credibility. They emphasise that India’s departure from its historical non-aligned stance may have long-term diplomatic and economic consequences.

Observers conclude that the unfolding developments in West Asia, coupled with India’s visible diplomatic positioning, warrant careful scrutiny, as regional power rivalries intensify and global alignments continue to shift.
