Meta blocks Kashmir Life’s Facebook, Instagram pages under indian pressure

Srinagar: The Facebook and Instagram pages of Kashmir Life, a Srinagar-based news portal, were made inaccessible in India and occupied Jammu and Kashmir after Meta restricted access following pressure from the Indian government.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Kashmir Life stated that there had been no prior public notice or communication before the access was blocked. Meta later issued an auto-response on the page confirming that the restriction was “pursuant to a notice from ‘The Government of India.’”

On Instagram, a notice displayed on the platform read: “We received a legal request to restrict this content. We reviewed it against our policies and conducted a legal and human rights assessment. After the review, we restricted access to the content in the location where it goes against local law.”

Kashmir Life’s verified Facebook page has approximately 1.8 million followers, while its Instagram account reaches nearly 200,000 users.

This is not an isolated incident. Kashmir Life and other independent news portals operating in the territory frequently face restrictions and censorship by the Modi-led Indian government for reporting on human rights violations committed by Indian forces in Kashmir. Such measures severely limit the flow of independent information, impede public access to factual reporting, and contribute to a climate of media suppression in the occupied region.
