Tornado hits Jammu’s Akhnoor, panic spreads among locals

Jammu: A rare tornado struck Jammu’s Akhnoor area last night, leaving residents startled and anxious.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the whirling column of wind lifted dust and light debris, prompting many to rush indoors or seek safer locations.

Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of IIOJK Meteorological Department, confirmed the tornado lasted about 10 minutes in an open field. No damage was reported, according to local police officials.

Residents described the event as unprecedented, with some sharing videos on social media expressing concern and seeking answers. The tornado was triggered by a squall line and thunderstorm cells, Dr Ahmad explained. Weather conditions changed abruptly, with black clouds and moderate rainfall preceding the event, followed by a rainbow over the city skyline.
