Election Commission acting like a “BJP department”: Congress

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal has launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India, saying the electoral body is functioning as an extension of the BJP.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Venugopal said that the Election Commission is behaving like a “BJP department”, pointing out that it swiftly issued a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while taking no action on Modi’s recent public speech.
He said that after the failure of bills related to women’s reservation and delimitation in Parliament, the Prime Minister’s recent address amounted to a clear violation of election rules and the Model Code of Conduct. However, despite complaints filed by the Congress and several opposition parties, no action was taken.
Venugopal suggested this reflected a bias within the Commission.
He further noted that although clarification had been provided on a key issue, Kharge was served a notice within 24 hours and given only a day to respond.
He questioned whether the Prime Minister enjoys complete immunity to make statements in violation of electoral laws, adding that the Election Commission has effectively been reduced to a wing of the BJP.
