Case filed against Bihar chief minister for forcibly removing Muslim woman’s hijab

Patna: A case has been filed against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for forcibly pulling down the hijab of a Muslim woman doctor during an official event in Patna.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the case was lodged by Samajwadi Party leader Sumaiya Rana in Lucknow.

The woman, Dr. Nusrat Parveen, has since refused to accept a government position following the Chief Minister’s disrespectful actions. Foreign media reports cite her brother, who confirmed that Dr. Parveen is in deep distress and has decided against taking up any role with the Bihar government.

The incident occurred two days ago during a ceremony at the Chief Minister’s residence, where doctors were handed appointment letters. During the event, Nitish Kumar abruptly pulled down the hijab of Dr. Parveen. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from Indian political leaders, journalists, and human rights organizations, who have described it as deeply shameful.

Human rights activist Deepika Pushkar Nath called the act a severe case of sexual harassment, while Mehbooba Mufti, President of the IIOJK’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the incident as an affront to women’s dignity.

Earlier, Amnesty International India had condemned the act, stating that the forced removal of a woman’s hijab by a public official is a grave violation of women’s dignity, identity, and personal freedom.
