Non-Kashmiri undertrial prisoner dies under mysterious circumstances in IIOJK jail

Srinagar: A non-Kashmiri undertrial prisoner lodged in Islamabad district Jail in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) died at a hospital on Saturday under mysterious circumstances, raising concerns over custodial conditions in the territory’s prisons.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased, identified as Suneel Kumar, a resident of Jalandhar Gandhi Camp in India’s Punjab state, was shifted from the district jail to Government Medical College Hospital in Islamabad after he complained of illness, where he died.

Officials said Kumar, who was an undertrial prisoner in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case, fell ill during the night while in custody. He was subsequently taken to the hospital but could not survive. They added that legal proceedings under Section of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been initiated.

Further details are awaited.

The incident adds to growing concerns regarding the health conditions, medical response, and treatment of prisoners in detention facilities across IIOJK, where allegations of custodial neglect and rights violations have frequently been reported.
