Flash floods claim 17 lives across Jammu region; search continues for missing
Jammu: At least 17 people were killed in flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant rain across the Jammu region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, while rescue teams continued searching for those still missing in the worst-hit Surankote area of Poonch district.
According to Kashmir Media Service, officials said Surankote bore the brunt of the disaster after cloudbursts and heavy rainfall triggered flash floods. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Surankote, Farooq Khan, said seven bodies have been recovered so far while eight persons remain missing.
In Murrah village, two bodies were recovered and six persons are still missing. Two bodies were also recovered from Sangla, and one each from Sangalani and Marhote. One person was reported missing from Dogrian Buffliaz.In Noona Bandi, 28-year-old Nazia Kouser died after her house collapsed, while four injured were shifted to District Hospital Poonch.
Road connectivity in several areas was also disrupted.
Meanwhile, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, postponed all examinations scheduled till July 24 due to the weather and flood situation.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain in occupied Jammu and Kashmir for Monday, urging residents to remain vigilant.
In north Kashmir, a cloudburst hit Dawar area of Gurez in Bandipora district, damaging a cowshed and a link road. No loss of life was reported.
