Over 123,000 students committed suicide in India from 2014–2024: NCRB
New Delhi : As many as 123,918 students committed suicide during Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India over the 10-year period from 2014 to 2024.
According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that a total of 123,918 students took their own lives during the period from 2014 to 2024.
The NCRB data showed that Maharashtra recorded the highest number of student suicides, with around 17,000 cases, followed by BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh state with approximately 10,000 cases.
According to the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) report, published by the NCRB, the number of student suicides increased by nearly 80 percent, rising from 8,068 in 2014 to 14,488 in 2024, the latest year for which data is available.
The ADSI report further highlighted that Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu consistently accounted for nearly half of all student suicides in India. It also noted that the geographical concentration of these cases was closely linked to major coaching hubs, particularly Kota, as well as metropolitan education centers such as Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
According to the report, “family problems” were identified as the leading cause of student suicides, followed by “failure in examination.”
The report comes at a time when thousands of students across India, particularly in New Delhi, have been protesting over recent examination-related controversies, including the NEET paper leak and concerns surrounding the CBSE Class 12 examination results.
In 2024, a total of 2,032 student suicides were attributed to examination failure, accounting for 14 percent of all student suicides recorded during the year.
