Muslim women to lead protests against MP’s UCC from August 16

Bhopal: Muslim organisations in Madhya Pradesh have announced a statewide campaign against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with women set to lead protests and submit petitions from August 16.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Congress MLA and AIMPLB member Arif Masood said the campaign would begin with petitions, public meetings and dialogue across the state. Masood described the UCC Bill as an “attack on the constitutional rights of Muslims” and an infringement of Article 25, which guarantees freedom of religion. He said a 21-member delegation, including 17 women, will submit a memorandum addressed to the President through the Governor between August 16 and August 20.
The campaign will also include outreach to other communities from August 21. Masood said tribal groups were also opposed to the proposed law and that the movement would not be limited to Muslims.He alleged that the government’s consultation figures were inflated, claiming only around 2,200 responses were recorded till the 22nd before the deadline was extended, after which the number rose to 7-8 lakh.
Masood said he had demanded in the Assembly that the Bill be sent to a select committee, but the government did not agree. Organisations including AIMPLB, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and Milli Council are part of the campaign.
