Even police families not safe as IPS officer’s mother murdered at UP home

Lucknow: The 95-year-old mother of IPS officer Ashutosh Mishra was found murdered at her home in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, with her gold jewellery missing, in yet another incident highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, police said Indrawati was found dead on a cot inside her house in Rudha Dhamrua village around 9 am. She lived alone after the death of her husband, a former government inter college principal. A domestic worker who found her alerted the neighbours.

Mishra, currently posted in Lucknow, reached the village around 3 pm and lodged a murder and robbery complaint against unidentified persons. Police said a gold chain, nose pin, earrings and anklets were missing, while no other household items appeared disturbed.

The family suspects that thieves entered the house on Saturday night, killed her and fled with the jewellery. Malipur SHO Shashank Shukla said, “The actual cause of death will become clear after the post-mortem report.” Police said investigations are underway. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the killing and criticised the state government over rising crime.

“In Ambedkar Nagar, the sad news has come of the murder of the mother of an IPS officer. The police themselves are not safe in Uttar Pradesh, unfortunate!” Yadav said in a post on X. The incident has sparked anger among locals, who said that if the family of a senior police officer is not safe in UP, the condition of common citizens can well be imagined.
