IIOJK MBBS, BDS interns warn of indefinite strike if demands not met
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has warned the authorities of indefinite protests if their demands are not met immediately.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the JKSA through a letter urged the authorities to address the long-pending demand for hike in the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns in the territory.
The JKSA said interns posted at Government Medical Colleges and other healthcare institutions are currently receiving Rs 12,300 per month and have been demanding an increase to Rs 30,000.
The association announced suspension of services, warning of an indefinite strike if their demand is not met.
JKSA said interns play a vital role in patient care by working in wards, emergency units, ICUs and operation theatres, often performing 24 to 36-hour duties. It termed the existing stipend inadequate given the rising cost of living and nature of responsibilities.
The association noted that a government committee constituted in June 2023 had recommended raising the stipend to Rs 26,350, but the recommendation remains unimplemented.
