UN must move beyond statements and take practical steps on Kashmir: Ghulam Muhammad Safi

Islamabad: All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) chapter Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi has said that the United Nations must take practical and effective measures, alongside reiterating its position, to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a meeting of the APHC-AJK chapter, chaired by Ghulam Muhammad Safi in Islamabad, discussed in detail the prevailing grave situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the global and diplomatic dimensions of the Kashmir dispute, and relevant UN resolutions.

The participants welcomed the UN’s reiteration of its position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an unresolved and disputed issue. However, they said that merely issuing statements and reiterating its position could not alleviate the sufferings of the Kashmiri people.

The Hurriyat leaders said that the Kashmir dispute has remained on the agenda of the UN Security Council for decades, and the world body has adopted several resolutions recognizing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Ghulam Muhammad Safi said that the Security Council resolutions were not merely historical documents but a test of the United Nations’ responsibility and the commitments made by the international community.

He said the international community must urgently take notice of Indian actions in IIOJK, restrictions on political activities and human rights violations. He added that the use of military force, curbs on political activities, human rights violations and denial of the Kashmiri people’s fundamental rights by India require the immediate attention of the international community.

Ghulam Muhammad Safi urged the UN Secretary-General and member states of the Security Council to exert diplomatic pressure on India and take practical measures to ensure the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

The meeting reaffirmed that the APHC would continue raising the voice of the Kashmiri people at international and diplomatic forums and pursue its political and diplomatic struggle for a just and lasting settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
