Delhi Police deny permission for AIMPLB protest at Jantar Mantar, demonstration postponed

New Delhi : The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has postponed its proposed protest scheduled at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi after the Delhi Police refused permission for the demonstration, citing the expected participation of a large number of people from Delhi and various parts of the country.
According to Kashmir Media Service, AIMPLB spokesperson and campaign convener Dr Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas in a statement said that the organisers had approached the Parliament Street Police Station three times and assured the Station House Officer (SHO) and Deputy Commissioner of Police that the number of participants would remain within the permitted limit.
However, according to the Board, the police maintained that information about the proposed demonstration had been widely circulated on social media and that a large number of people were expected to attend.

The AIMPLB said that holding a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi was a constitutional and legal right and expressed strong disapproval of the police decision to deny permission.
Despite its objections, the Board appealed to people from Delhi and other states who were planning to attend the protest not to travel to the capital for the demonstration.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and difficulties caused to you,” Dr Ilyas said in the statement.
The Board said that it would organise a larger programme at another venue in Delhi in the coming days. Details regarding the venue and date would be announced later.
The proposed demonstration was expected to draw participants from Delhi as well as several other states.
The postponement follows the police decision to withhold permission for the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar.
