Theft of votes, govts and now parties a symbol of democratic decline under Modi’s regime: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: Indian National Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, lower house of Indian parliament, Rahul Gandhi has said that under the Modi government, “the theft of votes, governments, and now parties has become a symbol of our democratic decline.”
According to Kashmir Media Service, Rahul Gandhi in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ strongly criticized the decision of the Election Commission to restrain rival factions of the Trinamool Congress from using the party’s name and election symbol during West Bengal’s by-elections.
He claimed that freezing the Trinamool Congress’s name and symbol was a “birthday gift” given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He remarked, “First Shiv Sena, then NCP, and now Trinamool Congress—the same modus operandi is adopted every time. The BJP and the Election Commission collude to split the party, and then its election symbol is snatched away.”
He said the constitutional duty of the Election Commission is to protect the public mandate but it is aiding the very forces that overturn the people’s verdict.
Rahul Gandhi added that if an entire party can be stolen, it is hardly surprising that the votes of crores of Indians can also be stolen. He asserted that this fight is not just Mamata Banerjee’s; it is a battle for every political party and voter who desires fair elections in India.
