NIA court rejects bail pleas of three Kashmiris jailed in false case
Jammu: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has rejected the bail pleas of three Kashmiris jailed in a false case registered in 2022.
Special Judge for NIA cases Prem Sagar rejected the bail pleas of Shafiq Ahmad Sheikh, Bilal Ahmed Wagay and Muhammad Ishaq Chopan, who are facing charges under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The case relates to an attack that took place in the Sanjwan area of Jammu in April 2022, in which the three men have been implicated. Counsel for the petitioners, Advocate I.H. Bhat, argued before the court that the accused had been in custody for more than three years. He sought their release on bail, citing the merits of the case and the delay in completing the trial. The prosecution strongly opposed the bail pleas.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail applications.
The implicating of Kashmiris in false cases and keeping them imprisoned for years in jails and detention centres is part of the Indian state’s repression against Kashmiris. Thousands of Kashmiris are currently imprisoned under draconian laws such as the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the UAPA.
