Livelihoods targeted through vehicle seizures in IIOJK: Locals

Srinagar : People in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have said that their businesses and livelihoods are being ruined on one pretext or another by the Indian authorities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, reacting to the seizure of around two dozen vehicles in Baramulla in the name of traffic violations, the locals termed it a premeditated plan to tighten the noose around the economy of Kashmiri people.

Indian police, in a statement issued on Saturday, said that over a dozen vehicles were seized for lacking valid documents, while eight were challaned.

Locals said such drives, especially in the name of anti-drug campaigns or traffic rules, have become a routine tool to harass transporters and small traders, seize their vehicles, and push them into financial distress.

The transporters said many of the seized vehicles are the sole source of income for poor families and their seizure without due process amounts to economic strangulation of Kashmiris.

They appealed to human rights bodies to take note of the systematic targeting of livelihoods under different pretexts in the occupied territory.
