24 houses set on fire, more Naga villages attacked in volatile Manipur
Imphal: Fresh attacks and arson targeting Naga villages in Manipur have deepened security concerns in the state, with several houses reportedly burned and residents displaced amid renewed tensions between Naga and Kuki communities in the hill districts.
Armed attacks were reported early Wednesday in Makui, Chamriupiu, Langka and Thanamba villages along the Kangpokpi-Senapati border. The Makui Village Authority has alleged that armed groups attacked the settlements and set houses on fire.
In a separate report, at least 24 houses in Makui Khuman and Makui Thanamba, also referred to as Chamruioiu, were reported to have been reduced to ashes. Residents said the affected villagers had already been displaced by earlier Naga-Kuki violence and were staying elsewhere. The full extent of the latest damage was still being assessed.
The fresh violence came amid heightened tensions along the IT Road corridor, where movement has remained subject to restrictions. Residents in affected areas have faced difficulties in accessing essential commodities, trade and medical services, adding to the humanitarian impact of the prolonged insecurity.
The violence also followed recent public remarks by senior National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) leader V.S. Atem, who called for greater Naga unity and alleged that the Indian government was supporting Kuki armed groups operating under the Suspension of Operations arrangement. His allegations concerning the role of Indian forces could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, Indian forces have intensified military operations in Manipur. A Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been deployed in the state, with agencies stepping up operations against NSCN-IM cadres and other armed groups.
