ECI-BJP nexus undermined people’s mandate in IIOJK: Omar Abdullah

New Delhi: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the Election Commission of India (ECI) colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), raising serious questions about the poll body’s impartiality and the fairness of the delimitation exercise in the territory.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Omar Abdullah questioned the delimitation exercise, which added seven Assembly constituencies in IIOJK. He pointed out that the BJP won six of the newly created seats in the 2024 Assembly elections in the territory, saying the outcome reinforced concerns his party had previously raised about the exercise.

He reiterated that his party had questioned the rationale behind the delimitation process, arguing that the electoral outcome had lent weight to its concerns.

Omar Abdullah made the remarks after joining a delegation of INDIA bloc leaders that met Indian President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan to raise concerns over the functioning of the ECI.

The delegation submitted a memorandum seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over electoral irregularities. It also called for the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded wider reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral system.
