Bangladesh former Army Chief Harun-Ar-Rashid found dead at Chittagong Club

Chattogram: Former Chief of Bangladesh Army Lieutenant General (Retd) M Harun-Ar-Rashid Bir Protik was found dead at the Chittagong Club guest house.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the 77-year-old Harun-Ar-Rashid had travelled to Chattogram to appear before a court in a graft case linked to Destiny Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd, according to police citing family sources.

Mohammad Mahfuz, Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (Kotwali zone) said when there was no response from his room for an extended period the next morning, club officials grew concerned and alerted the police, .

Officers forced the door open and discovered his body inside. It was later sent to the Combined Military Hospital in Chattogram.

Harun-Ar-Rashid served as Chief of Army Staff from 2000 until June 16, 2002.

He is survived by wife, one son, one daughter and many relatives.

His cousin, Professor Dr Najmun Nahar, said no postmortem would be conducted, and he will be laid to rest at the family graveyard in Katirhat village of Hathazari upazila, following a namaz-e-janaza at Chittagong Cantonment.

It is to be mentioned that the then prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina elevated Lt Gen (Retd) Harun-Ar-Rashid, later convicted in Destiny Group corruption case, as Army Chief to secure her grip on power and align Bangladesh’s military with Indian interests.

Today, from exile in India, she calls on Bengalis to rise for her, promising to “save” a nation she once compromised.

The leader who couldn’t protect her closest ally now claims she’ll protect Bengalis awakened by a youth-led revolution.
