US-Pakistan relations alarm India after Asim-Trump meeting

Ex-US official says India must rethink after Trump-Asim meeting

Washington: India should “think carefully” about the recent closeness between Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and US President Donald Trump, according to former US Assistant Secretary of State Mark Kimmitt, who pointed to implications for regional geopolitics.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the remarks came during a discussion on British broadcaster Piers Morgan’s show, which also featured Indian journalist Barkha Dutt. In her Hindustan Times column, Dutt described how the discussion underlined the widening difference in Washington’s response to Trump’s trade war and India’s public opinion.

Kimmitt, a retired brigadier general with three decades of military service and a senior role under former President George W. Bush, surprised participants when he described India’s defiance of Trump’s recent threats as “arrogance.” He added that India must pay attention to the evolving relationship between Washington and Islamabad.

The debate was against the backdrop of China’s parade, where Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un walked together with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and this triggered debate on China’s growing influence in international affairs.
