Over 9 million voters deprived of franchise in West Bengal Assembly elections
Kolkata: More than 9 million voters have been deprived of their right to vote in the ongoing Assembly elections in the Indian state of West Bengal, with Muslims forming the largest share among those affected.
According to Kashmir Media Service, reports in international media suggest that changes and exclusions in voter lists have triggered widespread concern, particularly in areas with a significant minority population.
Critics argue that such measures raise serious questions over the transparency of the electoral process and fair representation, while authorities have offered various explanations and justifications regarding the matter.
The first phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections was held on April 23, while the second and final phase is scheduled for April 29, 2026.
