Rajasthan UCC plan draws objections from Ajmer clerics, Muslim Board

Jaipur: Rajasthan’s BJP government has formed an expert committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code, intensifying debate in the state after Uttarakhand implemented UCC in 2024.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led government said the proposed code aims to bring uniformity in personal laws on marriage, divorce, adoption and inheritance for all citizens. However, Muslim organisations and religious leaders strongly opposed the move, fearing it would affect religious freedoms and constitutional protections for personal laws.
Syed Sarwar Chishti of Ajmer Sharif Dargah questioned why tribal communities retain exemptions while Muslims face a common framework. He accused the BJP of deepening societal divisions. All India Muslim Personal Law Board Vice-President Maulana Obaidullah Khan Azmi said Muslim personal laws are part of religious identity and must not be altered without consultation.
Congress leaders criticised the timing, urging focus on jobs and inflation instead.
