‘I am not Gandhi; be your own hero’, says Wangchuk amid indefinite fast

CJP protest enters its 23rd day today

New Delhi: Educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he is “just an ordinary citizen”, not a “modern Gandhi” or a hero, urging people to take responsibility and become the “heroes” of their own lives.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk made the remarks in a video posted on X as his indefinite hunger strike enters 15th day today at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

“Many people call me the Gandhi of the 21st century or a hero. These comments make me uncomfortable. I am neither Gandhi nor a hero. I am just an ordinary citizen who has tried to fulfil his responsibilities,” he said.

“Please don’t look for a hero in someone else. Be the hero of your own life. Fulfil your responsibilities as a citizen,” he added. Wangchuk said he was feeling less energetic but remained committed to the agitation.

A health update shared by the Cockroach Janta Party said he has lost 7.5 kg since beginning the fast and his blood pressure was recorded at 106/74 mm Hg. Referring to examination irregularities, Wangchuk urged people to join the protest.

“If you can’t come here every day, join us at least for one day at Jantar Mantar. If you can’t come to Delhi, observe a fast wherever you are,” he said. He also appealed to people to participate in the proposed march to Parliament on July 20 to urge MPs to take up the issues raised by protesters.

The CJP protest entered its 23rd day on Sunday. The outfit has been demanding the resignation of the Education Minister and Rs 1 crore compensation for families of students who allegedly died by suicide over examination irregularities.
