Delhi High Court seeks govt reply on PIL for Sonam Wangchuk’s medical intervention

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court has sought responses from the Modi government and the Delhi government on a public interest litigation seeking urgent medical intervention for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for 18 days.
According to Kashmir Media Service, a bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed both governments to file their responses and listed the matter for hearing on Thursday. The court said it was inclined to entertain the petition considering its urgency.
The PIL, filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, has sought directions to shift Wangchuk to a government hospital and provide medical treatment, including nutritional support, to prevent threat to his life. The plea claimed Wangchuk has lost around 8.5 kg since the strike began on June 28 and warned he “could die in 2 days” if the fast continues.
Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janata Party protests at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in the education system.
The petition argued that the government has a constitutional duty to protect life and ensure Wangchuk receives immediate medical care, even without his consent if necessary.
