Omar Abdullah warns of Gen Z-style agitation in IIOJK over reservation policy
Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has warned New Delhi of “Gen Z-style” agitation in the territory if the Cabinet sub-committee’s report on reservation policy is not finalized.
According to Kashmir Media Service, visibly upset over the BJP-led Indian government and its appointed Lieutenant-Governor’s approach towards the elected government, Omar Abdullah, speaking to reporters in Srinagar, said the IIOJK Lieutenant Governor’s office had raised questions over the Cabinet’s reservation report and that the elected government had submitted its replies.
“Was it sent to Delhi? Tell us whether it was accepted or not? The situation is such that a Gen Z-like protest could take place and we will not be responsible for that,” he said.
The fresh reservation policy in IIOJK, revised during the Lieutenant Governor’s rule, provides 60% reservation for various categories and leaves only 40% for the open category. After assuming office as Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah constituted a sub-committee to revise the policy, which submitted its report to the L-G in 2025.
Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah also said that the Indian government was dilly dallying on the issue of Transaction of Business Rules, mandatory to be drafted as per the IIOJK Reorganisation Act to define the roles and domains of the office of Chief Minister, the Council of Ministers and Lieutenant Governor.
“There were queries and objections. We brought changes in it. We showed flexibility. We are waiting for it to be implemented,” he said.
The rules have remained pending since Omar Abdullah’s National Conference won a majority of 42 seats in IIOJK in the 2024 elections. The L-G office and the CM office are yet to finalize the rules, essential for the smooth functioning of the elected government.
