Police foil protest over lathicharge, road conditions and student polls
Jaipur : Police detained several students in Alwar city of Rajasthan ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit on Sunday, preventing a proposed protest against the government over a range of issues, including alleged police action against students and the continued suspension of student union elections.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the students were taken into custody before a planned protest at RR College. Police sources said the protesters intended to raise the issue of the lathicharge on students at Jantar Mantar, poor road conditions, the Matsya scam and demand restoration of student union elections.
The students had also planned to display black flags during Shah’s visit to register their protest against the government.
The detentions came as Shah, accompanied by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, was scheduled to address a public meeting at Vijay Nagar Ground in Alwar and launch several development projects.
The incident has raised concerns over the authorities’ handling of peaceful dissent, particularly as students seeking to raise civic and political issues were detained before they could hold their proposed protest.
Shah was scheduled to virtually inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for 933 development projects worth Rs6,279 crore across Rajasthan, including 151 projects valued at Rs783 crore in Alwar.
The projects in Alwar include the foundation stone for a Rs200-crore Saras Dairy plant and the inauguration of a medical college.
A state-level Mukhyamantri Rojgar Utsav was also scheduled during the programme, where appointment letters were to be distributed to 10,548 newly recruited personnel, including 461 from Alwar district.
