Over 100 Assam women protest removal from welfare scheme
Guwahati: More than 100 women protested at the Khowang Sub-District Office in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, alleging that their names were removed from the state government’s Orunodoi welfare scheme for political reasons.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters from several panchayats alleged that genuine beneficiaries, including poor, widowed and specially-abled women, were excluded from the list after supporting Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi in the Assembly elections.
The women alleged that local BJP leaders and the area MLA were behind the removals, while financially well-off families, including those of government employees, continued receiving benefits.
The protesters demanded an immediate inquiry and restoration of benefits to all eligible beneficiaries. They warned of a larger democratic movement if their grievances were not addressed.
