Kuki woman killed, husband and son injured in Manipur attack

Incident on ‘Kuki Black Day’ sparks fear of renewed ethnic violence

New Delhi: A Kuki woman was killed and her husband and minor son were injured after armed men attacked their home in Tollen village of Manipur’s Tamenglong district in the early hours of Sunday, September 13.

The deceased was identified as Lhingjangai Singsit. Her husband, Seineh Singsit, suffered gunshot injuries, while their youngest son was also wounded.

The attack took place on Sahnit Ni, or Kuki Black Day, observed annually to commemorate victims of the Kuki-Naga violence of the 1990s.

Manipur has been gripped by ethnic conflict since May 2023, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has left over 200 dead and displaced more than 60,000 people.

The violence stems from long-standing resentment over land, political representation, and demands for Scheduled Tribe status. The Kuki-Naga clashes of the 1990s also left deep scars, with both communities accusing each other of massacres and displacement.

The latest killing in Tamenglong has renewed fears of old fault lines reopening amid the ongoing Meitei-Kuki unrest.
