Indian BJP govt extends ban on SIMI under UAPA for another 5 years
New Delhi: The Indian Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has extended the ban on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) by another five years in India.
The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has declared ‘Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)’ as ‘unlawful association’ and extended ban on it a further period of five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967, said the government in an order.
The last ban on SIMI was imposed vide Gazette Notification Number S.O. 564(E), dated the 31st January, 2019.
SIMI is the most popular students union mostly based on Muslim students and Hindutva BJP curbed their democratic political activities. Thousands of SIMI students, mostly medical, engineering and research scholars, have been languishing in Indian jails while several have been hanged and killed in the jails.
