Protests erupt in Meghalaya against harassment of veterinarian by BSF
Shillong: Meghalaya is in the throes of protests following reports of a veterinarian being harassed by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly as the BSF stands accused of perpetrating human rights violations against Muslims in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir and members of the Sikh community advocating for a separate homeland, Khalistan.
The incident occurred on February 11 in Muktapur, West Jaintia Hills District.
According to reports, Dr. Seiboklang Buam, a member of the Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association, was harassed by BSF officer Rejender Kumar and his colleague. The Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association (MVSA) condemned the incident, terming it as “high-handedness” and demanded a written apology from the BSF authorities.
In a statement, United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh also condemned the actions of the BSF personnel and emphasized the need for accountability. Mawthoh announced that the party would approach the Director General of BSF and the BSF Vigilance Department for an investigation and appropriate action against the personnel involved.
The incident has raised concerns over the conduct of BSF personnel and highlighted the importance of building trust with border residents. Calls have been made for BSF personnel to exercise restraint when dealing with local populations along the border areas.
The MVSA and political leaders are adamant on ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future, stressing the need for respect and dignity in border security operations.
