Need stressed to uphold press freedom, journalistic standards in India

New Delhi: The leading journalists has said that it is imperative for writers and other media personnel to safeguard freedom of the press and hold on to journalistic values, participants in India.

The seminar titled ‘Indian Media and Election Coverage,’ organised by Cogito Media Foundation in New Delhi, was presided over by Gautam Laheri, president of the Press Club of India. The event provided a platform to journalists from both alternative and mainstream media sectors to engage in discussions surrounding the challenges encountered during election coverage.

Leading journalists addressed challenges encountered during election coverage. They also emphasised the need for mutual coordination and support among digital media platforms.

Highlighted during the seminar was the establishment of the Cogito Media Foundation, a national-level organisation dedicated to fostering collaboration among alternative media platforms.

Distinguished speakers at the seminar included News Click’s Consulting Editor Bhasha Singh, The Quint’s Political Editor Aditya Menon, senior journalists Prashant Tandon and Maroof Raza, along with MX News Editor Shakeel Ahmed and Founder Editor of Nows Network, Ali Javed.

Shams Tabrez Qasmi, Chief Editor of Millat Times, delivered the inaugural address, and Ashraf Ali Bastavi, Founder Editor of Asia Times, proposed a vote of thanks. The program was effectively moderated by Saifur Rehman, Chief Editor of Insaaf Times.

Qasmi of Millat Times emphasised the need for unity in the face of challenges. “The establishment of Cogito Media Foundation signifies a collective effort towards ensuring that alternative voices are heard and valued in our society,” he said.

Bastavi of Asia Times echoed similar sentiments, stating, “It is imperative for digital media platforms to come together and advocate for press freedom and journalistic integrity with collaborative efforts.”

With 16 digital media organisations forming its core membership, including Millat Times, Clarion India, Maktoob Media, Muslim Mirror, and The Observer Post, the foundation is poised to embark on a series of initiatives. Plans include hosting a major media conclave in the capital, along with expanding membership outreach to additional media organisations, underscoring its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive media landscape in India.
