Islamabad: Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has expressed his appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending congratulations on his re-election.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a tweet, Sharif thanked Modi, stating, “Thank you @narendramodi for your felicitations on my election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.”
Modi conveyed his congratulations to Sharif during his oath-taking ceremony as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Sharif emphasized his government’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with neighboring countries while safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty. He asserted that Pakistan would not participate in any “great game” and would uphold relations with its neighbors based on principles of equality.
“We will maintain ties with our neighbors on the basis of equality,” Sharif remarked, highlighting his administration’s diplomatic stance.
Analysts view the timing of the greeting as potentially significant given the ongoing tensions between the two countries. They cite the statement of the United States, which expressed support for productive and peaceful talks between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.
