Tensions rise as Beijing reasserts claim on Arunachal Pradesh post Modi’s visit
Beijing: China has reaffirmed its claim over Arunachal Pradesh, asserting it as an “inherent part of China’s territory”, further escalating tensions between Beijing and New Delhi.
According to Kashmir Media Service, this declaration follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, during which New Delhi rejected Beijing’s objections.
Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Chinese defense ministry, reiterated China’s stance, emphasizing the region’s integral status within Chinese territory. Arunachal Pradesh, also known as South Tibet to China, has consistently been a point of contention between the two nations.
Modi’s dedication of the Sela Tunnel, aimed at bolstering connectivity and troop movement along the border with China, has further heightened tensions.
The construction of the Sela Tunnel, situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet and acclaimed as the world’s longest bi-lane road tunnel at such elevation, has drawn criticism from the Chinese military.
China’s objection to Modi’s visit elicited a staunch response from India, with the External Affairs Ministry reaffirming Arunachal Pradesh’s integral status within the country. External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India’s unwavering stance, underscoring that China’s objections would not alter the reality of Arunachal Pradesh’s sovereignty.
As tensions persist over territorial disputes, observers fear the situation could escalate further.
