Muslims protest as Delhi authorities demolish mosque

New Delhi: Protests erupted in Delhi’s Mangolpuri area today following the demolition of a mosque by authorities, accompanied by heavy deployment of Indian forces’ personnel.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the demolition was initiated based on a complaint filed by Hindutva leader Preet Sirohi. Earlier, another mosque was demolished in Bhavana based on his complaint.

Early in the morning, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), along with local police and a paramilitary company, arrived at Y block in northwest Delhi’s Mangolpuri to demolish the mosque, citing “illegal encroachment”, a justification frequently used by authorities to dismantle Muslim places of worship and residences.

As the demolition drive started, Muslim residents gathered at the spot and started protesting, an Indian official said. Reportedly, this led to clashes with police using force to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries to several residents.

The mosque’s imam, Maulana Abdul Rahim, condemned the demolition, asserting that the mosque was a legitimate place of worship and an integral part of the community. “This is a clear example of the government’s bias against Muslims,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Jimmy Chiram acknowledged objections to the demolition but assured that the situation was currently under control. The demolition was temporarily halted after knocking down a few walls because certain parts of the mosque required heavy machinery due to their structural strength, he added.

Despite the pause, authorities indicated their intent to resume the demolition, heightening concerns over escalating tensions in the area. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Indian authorities and Muslim communities, who feel increasingly marginalized and targeted under the current government.
