Thousands of fish found dead in Srinagar stream
Srinagar: Thousands of fish have been found dead in a stream near Barbar Shah area of Srinagar in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
According to Kashmir Media Service, the fish were found dead in the stream named Tsoonth Koul (Apple stream).
Local residents have expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing its potential impact on both the ecological balance and the livelihoods of those dependent on fishing. “This is not just about the death of fish; it’s about the entire ecological balance and our means of sustenance being threatened,” stated a local resident.
The fisheries department officials attributed the primary cause to oxygen depletion in the water. They said that high temperatures and humidity lead to reduced oxygen levels, which are fatal for fish. “Pollution also plays a significant role in exacerbating the situation,” they added. “Waste disposal and contaminants from surrounding areas further degrade water quality, intensifying the oxygen depletion.”
Locals have called on the IIOJK authorities to take stock of the situation and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
