Indian Muslim scholar Umar Khalid granted 7-days interim bail
New Delhi: A court in New Delhi has granted interim bail to Indian Muslim scholar and former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid for seven days.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Umar Khalid has been imprisoned in connection with a false case related to 2020 protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The Karkardooma Court in New Delhi granted Umar Khalid interim bail from 28 December, 2024 to 3 January, 2025. Khalid had filed a request for interim bail for ten days to attend his sister’s wedding.
On 7 December, the Delhi High Court heard his regular bail petition. During the proceedings, his lawyer informed the High Court that the only charge against Khalid was an incendiary speech in Amravati, Maharashtra, although Khalid had not incited violence during the speech.
It is noteworthy that the 2020 Delhi riots resulted in the deaths of 53 people and left more than 700 injured. Following these events, Umar Khalid was arrested on 13 September 2020 under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has been incarcerated for over four years.
