BJP-RSS aiming to destroy India’s education sector: Congress president
New Delhi: In a scathing critique, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the Modi government is attempting to dismantle India’s educational framework through severe budget cuts.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a post on X, Kharge condemned the budget cuts, stating, “The BJP-RSS is intent on destroying India’s education sector through relentless cuts. This year’s budget slashes higher education funding by a staggering Rs 9,600 crore—a reduction of 16.38 percent.”
Kharge further highlighted that the budget for premier institutions like IITs [Indian Institutes of Technology] and IIMs [Indian Institutes of Management] has been cut for the second consecutive year, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) has faced a drastic 61 percent reduction. He criticized the Modi government for undermining the UGC’s authority, stating, “The UGC, once the sole grant-giving body in the country, has seen its powers stripped away, compromising its autonomy.”
Kharge denounced what he described as a “5-pronged attack” on India’s education system, saying that the Modi government was controlling universities, choking funding for autonomous institutions, eroding their independence, undermining public education through favoritism, and betraying the youth of India.
